Gdiapers

This is the last diaper post for a while!

I bought these for Joanna when she was about Natalie’s age.  They’re a “hybrid” diaper.  You use a disposable (or flushable or compostable) insert inside this plastic shell, all wrapped up in a cloth outside.

They’re pretty cute and when used with the disposable insert, usually a lot less messy than “standard” cloth diapers.  The inserts are very expensive, about $.50 each versus the usual $.20 or so for a disposable.  So these are not for the frugal minded; they’re geared toward people who want ease and to be green.  I discovered that both my girls are sensitive to the material of the inserts.  Neither has ever had a reaction to any disposable or cloth diaper, but these inserts will always give them bad diaper rash.  Always.  It took me a little while to figure that out.  Bummer!

However, they do have a cloth insert now (you could of course stuff it with anything theoretically).  These inserts are microfiber and hemp, I think, and they fit perfectly inside the diapers.  I bought a package of 6 since I really wanted to be able to use my gdiapers.  I tried stuffing them with a prefold, but it was really bulky; this works better.

And fold the diaper up around the baby.  (I guess my model had gone to bed or something at this point.)

The velcro fastens in the back.  They have a handy “g” on them so you know it’s the back!

They’re super-cute and come in all kinds of colors, but they’re not something I’ll buy more of or recommend to anyone.  They’re probably perfect for some people, but I’ve found the pocket diapers are actually easier to use and both the pockets and prefolds are more absorbent.  Because these inserts have hemp in them, they should continue to get more absorbent as I wash and dry them.  So they may improve a little.  They’re easier than the prefolds to assemble and put on, so I do use them a few times a week.  I don’t mind going out of the house with these, but I do have to make sure to change them pretty frequently or they leak.
