Toddlers do not understand about stealing. It doesn't matter how hard you try to explain to them the MORTIFICATION you are feeling, they just don't get it. They won't for a few years.
Today was the LAST time Joanna got to ride in the car carts at Kroger, at least for a VERY long time. They're not my favorite anyway because I can't see her very well, she always takes off her shoes in there, and sometimes she drags her hands on the floor. That being said, she LOVES riding in the "yellow car," and usually she's content riding in it. Here's today's story:
She asked so nicely and was being so sweet this morning that of course I let her ride in the car cart. Natalie was in the Bjorn. We were just in to grab a few things. I obviously was not careful enough to keep the cart parked in the middle of the aisles where Sticky Fingers couldn't reach the stuff. At one point I looked down and she had her hands in a box of blueberry muffin mix. A $.65 box of blueberry muffin mix which was not on sale that I did not have a coupon for. Made me sad, broke my rhythm. Anyway, at least it's something we will eat. Yum, even. Love those imitation blueberry things. Anyway, I told her she wasn't going to be able to ride in the car cart if she took things off the shelf while I wasn't looking. And taking things is wrong, blah, blah, blah. We went through the 15 or less line (which is exciting because I never go through that line) to check out before heading to the car. It's as I'm opening the back of the car to put the groceries in that I see it: she's got a partially eaten package of Rolos! OMG!!! Oh, I was mortified. So I took it and talked more about how stealing is wrong, etc. then went back inside to give them my $.54. Grrrrrrrrrrr. The rest of the Rolos were really good. And they helped my mood.
After all of that, I bumped the stinkin' car cart (not on purpose!) which I'd forgotten to put away. Nothing got damaged.
I sure hope the rest of the day is not going to be like this. I'm not emotionally ready for it.
I had my crown set yesterday and woke up in terrible pain this morning. Feeling good now, but something must be wrong so I'm going back to the dentist this afternoon to have it checked. My WONDERFUL friend is going to watch Joanna for me (while her kiddos are sleeping -- did I mention she is wonderful?). I just don't think Sticky Fingers would handle that visit very well. Her sister, Sweet Girl Who Keeps Her Hands to Herself, will be fine I think.
OK, I totally thought this story was going to be about the little "alarm" going off in the store when someone walks out without paying for things, and that they had to come talk to you or something. The whole story is quite amusing (not to you, I'm sure!), but like you said, rollos really are so yummy :)
ReplyDeleteI learned this lesson just the other day, also. Paul David has started riding in the cars at Kroger too (he loves the Green Car), and at the checkout, I noticed he had something. It was a bottle of Ranch Dressing. I told myself then that I had to make sure I checked before I got to the checkout. All that to say, "happens to the best of us!"
