Birthday Cakes

My friend Shaun and I sent our men off the the KUMC Men’s Retreat yesterday.  :(

Most of our other friends headed to Austin for a girls’ weekend.  :(

We decided to make the best of it, though, and have a baking day at her house!

And we feel like really good wives.  :)

Here are most of my supplies I dragged to Shaun’s house this morning.  I just love tiny Joanna in the background!  And couldn’t you find a use for every single laundry basket, even if you had like ten hanging around the house?

I had grand visions of getting two cakes done and iced and maybe some tortillas and crackers and waffles… Ha!

I had enough trouble keeping Joanna out of the bathroom (playing in the sink).

I did managed to get my cakes made, though.

I remembered to bring a lot of things for the baking day.  That did not include 9x13 baking dishes, though.  Thank you for letting me borrow yours, Shaun! Oh, and you can’t have them back yet.  Turns out I didn’t do a great job of greasing the dishes, and the cakes are glued inside.  :)  You can have them back after the birthday party tomorrow.

Shaun made her first batch of homemade whole wheat bread, and I’m very excited to see how it turned out!  We all went out in the backyard for some good playing; I’ll post those pics in another entry.  There are some great ones!  Naps were calling our names, so we headed home about 2:00.  I’m very proud of Miss Natalie, though, because she took her morning nap in a strange pack-n-play in a strange room.  Yay for Natalie!

Back at home, EVERYBODY took a nap!

Then it was time to frost some cakes.

I decided on chocolate frosting for the yellow cake.

  When you are the birthday girl, you get to lick the beaters.  Yummo!

I discovered I only had enough powdered sugar for one batch of frosting, so we had to haul ourselves to the grocery store.  We fed Didi on the way.

At the grocery store, we called Mamma to discuss some candle business, and Joanna got on the phone. 

I kid you not.  She is very hilarious to me.

Back at home, I frosted the chocolate cake with some plain ‘ol white frosting.

This is the last picture I can leave you with tonight, though.  Pictures of the cakes fully decorated will have to wait until tomorrow after the Joanna/Pop birthday extravaganza!  Suffice it to say, though, that the cuteness of these cakes will definitely make up for the possibility of them not tasting good.  :)  Not that I expect that, it’s just that I couldn’t taste them without leaving a big hole!
